Use this Shared Parental Leave Calculator to discover exactly how much leave and statutory pay you and your partner can share to manage your childcare together. The tool uses the latest 2026 statutory rates and now allows you to input your salary annually, monthly, or weekly to determine your household budget across the 37-week paid period. It helps you understand how to “convert” maternity or adoption leave into shared entitlement and ensures you meet the HMRC eligibility requirements for Statutory Shared Parental Pay (ShPP).

What is the Shared Parental Leave Calculator?

The Shared Parental Leave Calculator is a specialised financial tool designed for UK parents who want to share the care of their child during the first year. Shared Parental Leave (SPL) and Statutory Shared Parental Pay (ShPP) allow mothers or primary adopters to end their leave early, “donating” the remaining weeks to a shared pool that both parents can use simultaneously or in alternating blocks.

In the 2026/27 tax year, the statutory rate for ShPP has increased to £194.32 per week. Because the rules surrounding “curtailment” and “notice of entitlement” are notoriously complex, this tool is essential for simplifying the math and showing you the total statutory funding available to your household based on your specific salary levels.

How is Shared Parental Pay (ShPP) calculated?

Shared Parental Pay is paid for a maximum of 37 weeks. It is derived from the original 39 weeks of Statutory Maternity or Adoption pay. Since the mother/primary adopter must take at least the first two weeks of leave (four weeks if they work in a factory), those first weeks are subtracted from the total, leaving 37 weeks of pay to be shared.

To calculate the weekly Shared Parental Pay (S) based on your average weekly earnings (A), the formula used is:

S = min(£194.32, A x 0.90)

According to Acas (2026), all weeks of Shared Parental Pay are capped at the statutory flat rate. Unlike the first six weeks of Maternity Pay (which is 90% uncapped), ShPP will never exceed £194.32 even if you are a high earner (Acas).

Example Shared Parental Pay Calculation

To understand the financial impact of using an annual salary input, consider this example.

Example: Sarah has a gross annual salary of £30,000. She decides to switch to Shared Parental Leave after week 6 of her maternity leave so her partner can stay home too.

  • Average Weekly Earnings: £576.92 (£30,000 ÷ 52 weeks).
  • Weeks 1-6 (Maternity Pay): 90% of £576.92 = £519.23 per week.
  • Weeks 7-37 (ShPP): Sarah or her partner receives £194.32 per week (the statutory cap).

Total support estimate:

  • Phase 1 (Maternity): 6 x £519.23 = £3,115.38.
  • Phase 2 (Shared): 31 x £194.32 = £6,023.92.

Total estimated pay: £9,139.30. Sarah now knows that by sharing leave after week 6, the household income for those weeks will drop to the flat statutory rate.

Entitlement Rules: How many weeks can you share?

The total pool of leave available to share is 52 weeks, but only 39 of those weeks are paid.

  • The Pool: 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay (after the mandatory 2 weeks for the mother).
  • Simultaneous Leave: You and your partner can be on leave at the same time. If you both take 10 weeks off together, you use 20 weeks of your leave pool.
  • The First Year: All Shared Parental Leave must be taken within 52 weeks of the birth or placement of the child.

Eligibility Criteria: The Continuity of Employment and Earnings Tests

To qualify for ShPP in 2026, both parents must satisfy the “Joint Eligibility” test:

  1. The Continuity of Employment Test: The parent taking the leave must have worked for their employer for at least 26 weeks by the end of the 15th week before the due date.
  2. The Employment and Earnings Test: The other parent must have worked for at least 26 weeks in the 66 weeks leading up to the due date and earned at least £390 total in 13 of those weeks.
  3. Individual Earnings: The person claiming the pay must earn at least £129.00 per week (the 2026 Lower Earnings Limit).

Booking Leave: Continuous vs. Discontinuous blocks

Shared Parental Leave is highly flexible. You can book leave in three separate “notices to book leave.”

  • Continuous Leave: A single block (e.g., 12 weeks). Employers must accept this if given 8 weeks’ notice.
  • Discontinuous Leave: Multiple blocks (e.g., 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off). Employers have the right to refuse this and request a single continuous block instead.
  • Notice: You must always give your employer at least 8 weeks’ notice before every block of leave.

ShPP vs. Maternity Pay: Understanding the financial difference

As the Shared Parental Leave Calculator highlights, ShPP is capped at £194.32. Most mothers wait until after the first 6 weeks of Maternity Pay are finished before switching to ShPP. This is because those first 6 weeks are 90% of actual earnings with no cap, whereas ShPP would immediately cap that pay at the lower statutory rate (GOV.UK).

How to use the Shared Parental Leave Calculator

  1. Select salary basis: Choose Annually, Monthly, or Weekly depending on how you are paid.
  2. Enter Gross Salary: Input your pay before any tax or pension deductions.
  3. Weeks of Shared Pay: Enter the number of weeks you intend to share (up to 37).
  4. Review Results: The calculator will show your “Calculated Weekly Average” and the “Total Shared Parental Pay” for that period.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can we both be on leave at the same time?
Yes. SPL allows you to be home together. You just need to ensure your total combined weeks do not exceed the shared pool.

What are “SPLIT” days?
These are “Shared Parental Leave In Touch” days. Each parent can work up to 20 days during their SPL without losing their statutory pay.

What if I am self-employed?
Self-employed parents do not qualify for SPL or ShPP. However, if one parent is an employee, the self-employed parent’s work can help the employee qualify.

Do we have to take the leave all at once?
No. You can break it up into separate blocks of leave, provided your employer agrees to discontinuous blocks or you book them as separate continuous notices.
